Hi there, I'm Nick Nation

Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD), Accredited Fertility Dietitian, Speaker & Coach

I’m an ex-tour guide turned progressive Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD), sports dietitian, lecturer and speaker. I'm also trying my hand as an entrepreneur, having founded Nutrition Nation in 2015, a nutrition behaviour coaching service that targets the underlying cause of overweight and obesity.

My passion for my work stems from my own personal journey in nutrition and health. I was once overweight. In fact, I struggled with my weight for a good portion of my teens and early 20’s. I remember feeling tired; finding it difficult to concentrate; to maintain relationships; to sleep, and the list goes on. I had developed some really unhealthy habits.

"Losing weight made me feel great, but it was like a physical and psychological rollercoaster."

I started playing around with dieting and heaps of exercise. With every attempt to lose weight, I would achieve short-term success. The calorie cutting and exercising everyday actually worked…for a while. Losing weight made me feel great, but it was like a physical and psychological rollercoaster. Sure I loved seeing the number on the scale going down, but the amount of effort and motivation required was exhausting. It wasn’t fun at all.

It all came to a head one day, I’d had a gutful. I started researching the best ways to lose weight and keep it off. With every article I read, I realised I’d been going about it all wrong. You see I was too focused on the symptoms – manipulating calories in and calories out. This required enormous willpower, something that eventually runs out. No wonder I always failed. Have you ever tried eating chicken and steamed broccoli every night for dinner? Never again!

The research taught me that I needed to look more at my behaviours around eating and exercise to lose weight and keep it off. Anything else would be a band-aid approach. I grabbed a piece of paper and jotted down all of my unhealthy habits that had anything to do with my weight. This was truly an enlightening, yet daunting experience. I was now fully aware of why I was overweight.

I began chipping away at these unhealthy habits, one at a time, never moving onto the next until I was sure that I had broken the habit and replaced it with a healthy one. Guess what? The weight just disappeared and I’ve never found it again.

I find the best dietitians and nutrition coaches are the ones that have been through it themselves. Since those days I’ve learned an awful lot about nutrition, the human body, and more importantly – the coaching techniques that resonate with my clients.
